Quick answer: A group (shared) tour in Morocco is cheaper and sociable but follows a fixed schedule in a minibus of up to around 17 people. A private tour costs more but gives you your own vehicle and driver-guide, flexible stops, better-chosen hotels and a pace that suits you. For short desert trips on a tight budget, shared works; for trips of 5 days or more, families, couples and photographers, private is usually worth it.
We run both kinds of trips, and we are asked this question every day. The honest answer is that neither is always better; it depends on your budget, how long you are travelling and what kind of traveller you are. Here is how they really compare on the road.
What a Group Tour in Morocco Looks Like
The most common shared tour is the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga round trip. You are picked up early, often around 7 am, and join 10–17 other travellers in a minibus. The route is fixed: Aït Benhaddou, a night in the Dades area, the Todra Gorge, a camel ride and one night in a standard desert camp, then a long drive back to Marrakech.
Advantages
- Price: the cheapest way to reach the Sahara if you are travelling solo or as a couple.
- Social: great if you enjoy meeting other travellers.
- Zero planning: everything is arranged, including meals on the road.
Disadvantages
- Fixed stops at set restaurants and shops, often with commissions.
- Rushed sights: you may get 45 minutes in Aït Benhaddou and a quick walk into the Todra Gorge.
- Basic accommodation and large, busy camps.
- Language and pace set for the whole group, not you.
- No one-way option in many cases, meaning you return to Marrakech even if Fes would suit your trip better.
What a Private Tour Looks Like
On a private tour you have your own air-conditioned vehicle (usually a 4x4 or a comfortable minivan for larger families) and a driver-guide who speaks your language. You choose the start time, the route, how long to stay at each place and the category of hotels and camps.
Advantages
- Flexibility: stop for photos, a walk in the palm groves or mint tea with a nomad family whenever you like.
- Better experiences: quieter camps, kasbah hotels, time for sunrise without rushing.
- One-way routes: start in Marrakech and finish in Fes, or start at Casablanca airport.
- Tailored pace for children, older travellers or photographers.
- Local insight: one guide with time to answer your questions about Amazigh culture, farming, history and daily life.
Disadvantages
- Higher cost, especially for solo travellers since the vehicle cost is not shared.
- Less social, if meeting other travellers is part of the fun for you.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Factor | Group tour | Private tour |
|---|---|---|
| Group size | Up to ~17 | Just you |
| Route and timing | Fixed | Flexible, one-way possible |
| Accommodation | Basic to standard | Your choice, standard to luxury |
| Desert camp | Large shared camp | Smaller or private camp |
| Best for | Budget solo travellers, short trips | Couples, families, longer trips |
What About Cost?
Shared 3-day desert tours are the cheapest option on the market. Our 3-day tour from Marrakech starts from €240 per person, and the per-person price drops as your group grows because you share the vehicle. For longer trips, the gap narrows: over 9–12 days, the extra cost of privacy is often small compared with the gain in comfort and freedom. Our 12-day Grand Morocco tour from Casablanca, for example, starts from €1,650 per person, including private transport, a driver-guide and accommodation.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose a group tour if:
- You are travelling alone on a tight budget.
- You only have 3 days and do not mind returning to Marrakech.
- You enjoy meeting people and do not mind a fixed programme.
Choose a private tour if:
- You are travelling as a couple, family or small group.
- Your trip is 5 days or longer, or covers several regions, as in our 10-day Morocco itinerary.
- You want to finish in a different city from where you start.
- You care about the quality of your camp and hotels, or want to take your time with photography.
A Middle Ground: Private Transfers and Shared Desert Nights
Some travellers combine the two: they take a private driver over the long stretches and join a shared activity in Merzouga, such as a camel trek or a quad bike session. Others travel independently by bus or train to the big cities (the CTM and Supratours buses reach Merzouga from Fes and Marrakech) and book a private desert programme once they arrive. It all depends on your time and priorities.
Questions to Ask Before You Book Any Tour
- How many people will be in the vehicle, and what kind of vehicle is it?
- Is the driver licensed for tourist transport, and does he or she speak your language?
- Which camp will you stay in, and are the tents private with their own bathrooms?
- What meals are included, and are there compulsory shop stops?
- Can the route be one-way, and can you add a second desert night?
A reliable operator will answer all of these clearly. If you are planning a longer trip that also covers the north, our two-week Morocco itinerary shows how a private route can flow.
