Quick answer: A luxury desert camp in Merzouga is a small cluster of private tents set among the Erg Chebbi dunes, each with a proper bed, an en-suite bathroom with hot shower and flush toilet, electricity and often heating or cooling. Dinner, breakfast, a camel or 4x4 transfer and evening music are usually included. It is the comfortable way to sleep in the Sahara without giving up the silence and the stars.
The first night in the desert is often the moment people remember most from Morocco. We live in Merzouga and look after guests in the dunes of Erg Chebbi every week, so we see how much the camp shapes that memory. A good luxury camp lets you enjoy the wildness of the place while sleeping properly, showering after a dusty day and eating well. This guide explains what "luxury" usually means here, what it does not mean, and how to choose.
Standard camp vs luxury camp
All camps in Erg Chebbi share the same setting: tall orange dunes, some reaching around 150 m, a sky with almost no light pollution, and deep silence after dark. The difference is in comfort and privacy.
| Feature | Standard camp | Luxury camp |
|---|---|---|
| Tent | Traditional tent, simple beds or mattresses | Spacious private tent, double or twin beds, rugs, furniture |
| Bathroom | Shared toilet and shower block | En-suite with hot shower, flush toilet and washbasin |
| Electricity | Lights, sometimes limited charging | Lights and sockets in the tent, usually solar-powered |
| Climate | Blankets | Heavier bedding, heaters in winter, fans or air-conditioning in some camps |
| Dining | Shared table | Multi-course dinner, often private tables and fire-side seating |
| Access | Camel trek | Camel trek, with 4x4 luggage transfer or 4x4 option |
What a night in a luxury camp looks like
Late afternoon: arriving in the dunes
Most guests arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon after the drive from Marrakech or Fes. Your main luggage goes to the camp by 4x4 while you ride a camel into the dunes, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, timed so you reach a high ridge for sunset. If riding a camel is not for you, you can go in by 4x4 instead. You can read more about the ride in our guide to camel trekking in Merzouga.
Evening: dinner, fire and music
Dinner usually starts with Moroccan salads or harira soup, then a tagine or couscous, and fruit or a sweet to finish. Many camps light a fire afterwards and the team plays Gnawa or Berber drums. Alcohol is not always available, so ask in advance if you would like wine with dinner. For couples, a private table set away from the main tent is a lovely upgrade; our article on a private dinner under the Sahara stars explains how we arrange it.
Night and sunrise
Once the lights go down, the sky opens up. Wake early for sunrise from the dune behind camp, then breakfast with bread, eggs, jams, fresh orange juice and mint tea before heading back to Merzouga.
How to choose a good luxury camp
There are many camps in Erg Chebbi and the word "luxury" is used loosely. These are the questions we suggest asking:
- Is the bathroom truly inside or attached to my tent? Some "deluxe" tents still share a block.
- Where exactly is the camp? Camps deeper in the dunes feel more remote; those on the edge are easier to reach but you may see village lights.
- How many tents? Smaller camps, around 8 to 15 tents, feel calmer than large ones.
- How is it powered and heated? In December and January nights in the dunes can approach 0°C, so heating and good bedding matter.
- What about water and waste? Responsible camps manage water carefully and remove rubbish from the dunes.
- What is included? Confirm dinner, breakfast, drinks, transfers and any sandboarding or stargazing.
When is the best season?
October to April is the most comfortable period for a luxury camp: warm, sunny days around 18 to 28°C and cool to cold nights. Spring can bring windy days with blowing sand, especially in March and April. From June to August daytime heat often exceeds 40°C; camps with air-conditioning help, but we plan the day around early mornings and late afternoons. Around Christmas, New Year and Easter camps fill quickly, so book early if you travel then.
What does it cost?
Price depends on the camp, the season and what is included. As a guide, a night in a luxury tent with dinner, breakfast and a camel trek usually costs noticeably more than a standard camp, and the best private-tent camps sit at the top of the range. Rather than booking a single night in isolation, many couples and families combine it with private transport, kasbah hotels and guided visits. Our 7-day luxury Morocco desert trip starts from around €1,450 per person and includes a night in a private en-suite desert tent as part of a full private itinerary.
What to pack for a luxury camp
- A warm layer and a hat for evenings, even in spring and autumn
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for sand and wind
- Comfortable shoes or sandals you can empty of sand easily
- A small overnight bag, so your main luggage can stay in the vehicle if you prefer
- A power bank for photos of the night sky
You do not need to bring towels, toiletries or bedding; good camps provide them.
Luxury camp combined with the rest of your trip
The camp is one night, but the journey around it matters. On the way from Marrakech we like to stay in characterful earthen kasbahs in the Skoura palm grove or the Dades Valley, which you can read about in our guide to riads and kasbahs on the desert route. Couples often add a surprise element too, from a private dinner to something bigger, as in our guide to proposing in the Sahara.
Sleep in the dunes with us
We are a local Merzouga team, and we choose camps by how they treat guests, staff and the desert, not by who pays the highest commission. If you want the comfort of a private tent without losing the magic of the dunes, have a look at our luxury desert trip with a private en-suite camp, or send us your dates through our contact page and we will suggest the right camp and season for you.
