Quick answer: The best way to propose in the Sahara is at sunset or under the stars in the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, with a quiet spot arranged in advance by a local team: rugs, lanterns, a hidden photographer or a friend with a camera, and a private dinner afterwards. October to April gives the most comfortable weather, and a little planning around timing, wind and ring safety makes all the difference.
Every season, someone contacts us with a message that starts, "Please do not tell my partner, but...". We love these requests. The dunes of Merzouga are quiet, golden and far from everyday life, which makes them a natural stage for a proposal. Because we live and work here, we know the ridges that catch the last light, the hollows that shelter from the wind and the small details that turn a nice moment into a perfect one. Here is how to plan it.
Why propose in the Sahara?
- Silence: once you are a few minutes into the dunes, there is almost no sound except the wind.
- Light: sunset turns the sand from gold to deep orange to pink within half an hour.
- Stars: on clear, moonless nights the Milky Way is easy to see with the naked eye.
- A natural surprise: a desert trip already includes a sunset walk or camel ride, so your partner suspects nothing when you head up a dune.
Choosing the moment: sunset, night or sunrise?
Sunset
The most popular choice. We lead you, by camel or on foot, to a ridge facing west, where a small setup is waiting: a rug, cushions, perhaps lanterns and a few flowers. Sunset photos are warm and flattering. The drawback is that other groups also watch the sunset, so we choose a spot a little away from the usual paths.
Under the stars
After dinner, a short walk away from camp to a lantern-lit circle in the sand feels intimate and dramatic. Photos need a photographer who knows night shooting, and the air turns cold in winter, so bring a warm layer. Our guide to stargazing in the Sahara explains which moon phases give the darkest skies.
Sunrise
The quietest option, with cool air and soft pink light. It requires getting your partner up before dawn without raising suspicion, which is easier than you think since watching the sunrise is part of every desert night.
Setup ideas we can arrange
- Simple and natural: a rug, two cushions and a flask of mint tea on a secluded dune.
- Lanterns and a heart in the sand: candles in lanterns (safe in wind) outlining a heart or your initials.
- Private dinner: after the question, a table for two set away from camp with a candlelit Moroccan meal. See how it works in our article on a private dinner under the stars.
- Music: our team can play drums softly at camp afterwards to celebrate.
- A private luxury tent: ending the evening in an en-suite tent adds comfort and privacy; our luxury desert camp guide explains what to look for.
We keep decorations natural and remove everything afterwards. Please no balloons, glitter or confetti; they blow away and stay in the desert for years.
Capturing the moment
Photos matter to most couples. You have three main options:
- A local photographer: hides behind a nearby dune and moves in after the "yes". Ask us early, as availability in Merzouga is limited.
- Our guide: can take photos and video on your phone. They know the angles, though they are not professional photographers.
- A tripod: set a phone on a small tripod with video running, framed in advance.
Drones are restricted in Morocco and can be confiscated at the airport, so do not plan around drone footage unless you have a permit.
Practical tips from our team
- Protect the ring: sand is fine and everywhere. Keep the ring in a zipped inner pocket, and never open the box over loose sand in the wind.
- Check the wind: strong winds can happen, especially in spring. We watch the forecast and have a sheltered backup spot.
- Keep a code word with us: it lets us communicate discreetly on the day.
- Consider the camel ride: proposing from a camel sounds fun but is awkward. Better to dismount at the dune first.
- Dress for photos and temperature: warm evening layers from November to March, light clothes and a scarf from April to October.
- Tell us about dietary needs for the celebration dinner.
Best season for a desert proposal
October to April is ideal: comfortable days, clear skies and long golden sunsets. November and February are often particularly calm and clear. In summer, from June to August, daytime temperatures often exceed 40°C, so everything happens after 6 pm; it is still possible but more tiring. Check the moon calendar too: a full moon lights the dunes beautifully but hides most stars, while a new moon gives the richest starfield.
Building the trip around it
Most couples arrive in Merzouga on a multi-day trip from Marrakech or Fes. Plan for at least one night in the dunes, and ideally two if you want a relaxed day after the big moment. The drive itself, through Ait Benhaddou, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge, adds anticipation and beautiful stops.
