Honeymoon in Morocco: Romantic Ideas from Riads to the Sahara

Couple silhouetted on a Sahara dune ridge at sunset near Merzouga, Morocco

Quick answer: A honeymoon in Morocco works best as 7 to 12 days combining a romantic riad in Marrakech or Fes, one or two nights in a private desert camp in the Merzouga dunes, and a slower stop such as the Dades Valley, the Atlas Mountains or Essaouira. March to May and September to November give the most comfortable weather, and a private driver keeps the pace relaxed.

We meet many newly married couples in Merzouga, often arriving after a few busy days in the cities, a little tired and then suddenly quiet when they reach the top of the first dune. Morocco is a wonderful honeymoon country because it mixes sensory cities, dramatic landscapes and genuine calm in one trip. The trick is pacing it so it feels like a honeymoon and not a marathon. Here are the ideas and practical advice we share with couples.

Why Morocco for a honeymoon?

  • Variety in a short flight: around 3 to 4 hours from most of Western Europe, with cities, mountains, desert and ocean all within reach.
  • Intimate places to stay: riads, small houses built around a courtyard, feel private in a way big hotels rarely do.
  • The Sahara: few experiences feel as remote and romantic as a night in the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
  • Great value: a high level of comfort and personal service costs less than in many classic honeymoon destinations.

Romantic ideas, place by place

Marrakech: rooftops and hammams

Choose a small riad in the medina with a plunge pool or rooftop terrace. Book a couple's hammam and massage, watch sunset over the Koutoubia from a roof terrace, and explore the Majorelle Garden early before the crowds. Keep one afternoon totally free; the medina is intense and you will appreciate the courtyard calm.

The Atlas Mountains

An hour or so from Marrakech, mountain lodges in the Ourika or Imlil valleys offer quiet walks, fresh air and views of the High Atlas. It is a good soft landing after a long journey or a peaceful break between the city and the desert.

The road through Ait Benhaddou and the valleys

The route to the Sahara passes the earthen ksar of Ait Benhaddou, the palm groves of Skoura and the Dades Valley. Spending a night in a restored kasbah here, with dinner by candlelight, is one of the most atmospheric stays in the country.

Merzouga: the heart of the trip

This is where we live. A sunset camel ride to a private en-suite tent, dinner under the stars, and sunrise from the dune behind your tent together make the moment most couples tell us about later. For extra privacy we can arrange a separate table away from other guests, as described in our guide to a private dinner in the Sahara. Some partners use this setting for something even bigger; if that is you, read our tips on a proposal in the Sahara desert.

Fes or Chefchaouen

If you fly out of Fes, the old medina and its craft quarters make a fascinating last stop. Chefchaouen, the blue town in the Rif, is about 3.5 to 4 hours from Fes and suits couples who love photography and slow wandering.

Essaouira: the Atlantic finish

About 2.5 to 3 hours from Marrakech, Essaouira's breezy ramparts, fish grilled at the harbour and long beach are ideal for the last few days of rest.

  2. Day 3: Drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ait Benhaddou; night in a kasbah in Skoura or the Dades Valley.
  3. Day 4: Todra Gorge walk, then to Merzouga for a sunset camel ride and a night in a private desert tent.
  4. Day 5: Sunrise, a slow morning, then a second night in the dunes or a relaxed afternoon in Merzouga.
  5. Day 6: Drive north through the Ziz Valley and the Middle Atlas cedar forests to Fes (about 7 to 8 hours).

Best time for a Moroccan honeymoon

SeasonWeatherHoneymoon notes
March to MayWarm days, 20 to 30°C in the southExcellent everywhere; occasional sandy winds in the desert
June to AugustVery hot inland, often 40°C+ in MerzougaBetter for the coast and mountains; desert only with care
September to NovemberWarm and stableOur favourite season for the Sahara
December to FebruarySunny days, cold nights near 0°C in the dunesQuiet and cosy; choose a heated camp

Also check the dates of Ramadan, which moves about 11 days earlier each year. Travelling during Ramadan is perfectly possible and can be special, but some restaurants close during the day and the rhythm of cities changes.

Practical tips for couples

  • Private transport beats buses: distances are long, and a private driver lets you stop when you want.
  • Tell your hosts it is your honeymoon: riads and camps often add small touches like rose petals or a cake.
  • Public affection: holding hands is fine; more intimate gestures are best kept private in this conservative society.
  • Alcohol: available in many hotels and some restaurants, not everywhere; ask before assuming.
  • Do not overpack the schedule: one fixed activity a day is usually plenty.

How much does a honeymoon in Morocco cost?

Costs vary with the level of accommodation, but as a guide a private desert-focused trip with good riads, kasbahs and a luxury tent starts from around €890 per person for five days, while a longer premium itinerary with top camps and handpicked kasbah hotels, such as our luxury Morocco tour, is higher. Flights, a few independent dinners and souvenirs come on top.
