Quick answer: To get to Merzouga, most travellers come by road from Fes (about 470 km, 7-8 hours) or Marrakech (about 560 km, 9-10 hours), either on a private or shared desert tour, by rental car or on an overnight bus. The nearest airport is Errachidia Moulay Ali Cherif, about 130 km (roughly 2 hours) away.
Merzouga is a small village at the western edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in south-east Morocco, close to the Algerian border. It feels remote, and in a good way, but the roads leading here are paved and in good condition all the way to the village. Below we explain every realistic way to arrive, with honest pros and cons from a team that makes the journey every week.
Option 1: A desert tour from Fes or Marrakech
For most first-time visitors, joining a tour is the simplest and often the most rewarding option. Transport, a driver who knows the road, the camel trek and the night at camp are handled together, and you see the landscapes between the cities and the Sahara instead of just passing through them.
From Fes
Fes is the closest imperial city to Merzouga. The route climbs through the cedar forests around Ifrane and Azrou (look out for Barbary macaques), crosses the Middle Atlas to Midelt, then follows the Ziz Valley and its gorges down to Errachidia, Erfoud and Rissani. It is about 470 km and 7-8 hours of driving with stops. Our 2-day Fes to Merzouga desert tour does exactly this, with a sunset camel ride and a night in the dunes before returning to Fes.
From Marrakech
From Marrakech the journey is longer, about 560 km, crossing the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, then passing Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorge. Doing it in one day is technically possible but exhausting, so we split it over two days. Our guide to the Marrakech to Merzouga route breaks down every stage.
Option 2: By bus
Two main companies serve Merzouga: Supratours (linked to the national rail operator ONCF) and CTM. Services and timetables change seasonally, so always check the current schedule at the station or online a few days before travel.
- From Fes: usually an overnight bus, around 9-11 hours, arriving in Merzouga early morning.
- From Marrakech: long overnight journeys, typically 12-14 hours, sometimes with a change.
- Local connections: shared grand taxis link Rissani, Erfoud and Errachidia with Merzouga.
The bus is the cheapest option, but you will arrive tired and still need to arrange your camel trek and camp. If you go this way, let us know your arrival time and we can meet you in the village.
Option 3: Self-drive with a rental car
Driving yourself is very doable. The roads are paved, fuel stations are available in Errachidia, Erfoud and Rissani, and signage is in Arabic and French. A normal car is fine to reach Merzouga village; you do not need a 4x4 unless you plan to drive off-road, which we strongly advise against in the dunes without local experience.
A few tips from us:
- Avoid driving after dark; donkeys, cyclists and unlit vehicles are common on rural roads.
- Watch for police speed checks, especially entering villages where the limit drops to 60 or 40 km/h.
- Leave your car at your auberge or camp meeting point; our team takes you into the dunes on camels or by 4x4.
- Expect the High Atlas pass to take longer than the map suggests because of bends and trucks.
Option 4: Flying into Errachidia or Ouarzazate
If time is short, flying is worth considering.
- Errachidia (Moulay Ali Cherif Airport): the closest airport, about 130 km and roughly 2 hours by road from Merzouga. It mainly has domestic flights from Casablanca, and seasonal international routes have operated in some years. Check current airlines before planning around it.
- Ouarzazate Airport: about 370 km from Merzouga, 5-6 hours by road via the Dades and Todra valleys. Useful if you want to see the gorges on the way.
- Fes-Saïss Airport: with many European low-cost connections, Fes is often the best international gateway to the desert.
We can arrange a private transfer from Errachidia or Ouarzazate airport directly to your camp or auberge.
Comparing your options
| Option | Time | Best for |

| Private or shared tour | 2-4 days round trip | First visit, stress-free travel, seeing the route |

| Rental car | 7-10 hours of driving | Independent travellers, confident drivers |
| Flight + transfer | Half a day from Casablanca | Short trips and limited time |
Once you arrive in Merzouga
The village of Merzouga and neighbouring Hassilabied, a few kilometres north, are the two main bases for the dunes. Camps are hidden inside Erg Chebbi and are reached by camel (about 1 to 1.5 hours) or by 4x4. Luggage usually stays at the auberge, so bring a small backpack with what you need for one night. South of Merzouga lie Khamlia, the Gnawa music village, and further on Taouz, while Rissani, with its famous market, is about 40 km to the north.
