1 Week Desert Tour from Tangier
This one-week private tour is our most complete route from Tangier to the Sahara. It suits travellers arriving from Spain or elsewhere in Europe who want the north and the desert in the same trip, with a full day to explore Fes and two nights in Merzouga instead of one.
Chefchaouen, Volubilis and Meknes
Your driver meets you in Tangier — at the port, Ibn Battouta airport, the train station or your hotel — and takes you through the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen for the night. On day two you head south to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, with their mosaics still in place, and the imperial city of Meknes, with its monumental Bab Mansour gate, before arriving in Fes.
A full day in Fes
Fes el-Bali is often described as the largest car-free urban area in the world, and a single afternoon does not do it justice. A licensed local guide spends the day with you in the old city, from the Bou Inania madrasa and the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque to the Chouara tanneries and the workshops of the coppersmiths and weavers.
Two nights in the Sahara
From Fes we cross the Middle Atlas and follow the Ziz Valley to Merzouga, where the first night is spent at a guesthouse at the foot of the dunes. The next day you explore the area by 4x4 — Gnawa music in Khamlia, the market town of Rissani, nomad families and fossil workshops — before a sunset camel trek to our desert camp in Erg Chebbi. Read our Erg Chebbi dunes guide to see what to expect.
The south and Marrakech
The last two days take you west through the Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley, then along the road of a thousand kasbahs to Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou, before crossing the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Marrakech. If you would rather finish in the north, we can adapt the route to end in Fes or Tangier, or extend it into our 2-week tour from Tangier via the imperial cities.
Day by day
Itinerary

Day 1
Tangier – Chefchaouen
Meet your driver at Tangier port, Ibn Battouta airport, the train station or your hotel. If time allows, stop at Cap Spartel, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean, then drive about two hours through the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen. Evening walk in the blue medina and overnight in a riad.

Day 2
Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes
Drive about three hours south to the Roman ruins of Volubilis and walk among the mosaics and the triumphal arch. Continue to Meknes for Bab Mansour and the Place el-Hedim, then on to Fes, about an hour away. Overnight in a riad in the Fes medina.

Day 3
Fes guided medina tour
Spend a full day in Fes el-Bali with a licensed local guide: the tanneries, the madrasas, the souks and the artisan workshops, finishing at the Marinid tombs for the view over the old city. Second night in Fes.

Day 4
Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest, with a lunch stop in Midelt. Follow the Ziz Gorges and palm groves through Erfoud to Merzouga, around eight hours with stops. Dinner and overnight at a guesthouse beside the dunes.

Day 5
Merzouga: Khamlia, Rissani and camel trek to camp
Spend the day exploring by 4x4: Gnawa music in Khamlia, tea with a nomad family, fossil workshops and the market town of Rissani. In the late afternoon, ride camels into Erg Chebbi for sunset. Dinner and overnight at our desert camp.

Day 6
Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley
Watch the sunrise from the top of a dune, ride back for breakfast and drive west to Tinghir. Walk into the Todra Gorge, then continue to the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight in a hotel overlooking the valley.

Day 7
Dades – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Marrakech
Follow the road of a thousand kasbahs through Skoura to Ouarzazate and visit the ksar of Ait Benhaddou. Cross the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass and arrive in Marrakech in the early evening, where your driver drops you at your riad, hotel or the airport.
